Sun Safety

By: Dr. Rhonda Klein, MD, MPH, FAAD

May is skin cancer awareness month, and last week on our blog we shared important information about melanoma and how to keep your skin healthy! Since avoiding UV exposure is the most preventable risk factor for all skin cancers, including melanoma, today we are sharing our list of best sunscreens and a few other tips for keeping your skin safe in the sun.

90% of skin aging and health is based on environmental factors – so protecting your skin from the environment is the best way to keep your skin healthy, and slow down the aging process!  In addition to SPF every day, we recommend a topical antioxidant like our Antioxidant Super Serum.  Antioxidants are a powerful way to help protect your skin from environmental and free radical damage.  Antioxidants have the ability to neutralize the damaging compounds that cause cell damage, which in turn cause wrinkles and age spots, but also cancerous cell growth. When used in conjunction with SPF, topical antioxidants have been found to make sunscreen more effective! We also recommend covering up when you’re outside with hats and SPF clothing like rash guards – you’ll never catch my family without their hats on!

A question we commonly get is – What Type of SPF Should I be Using?

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, a minimum of SPF 30 is suggested. Look for broad spectrum protection that specifies UVA and UVB rays and preferably choose a water-resistant formula. We recommend sticking to plain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide based mineral sunscreens.

Read on for our list of favorite sunscreens for everyone in your family! We want you and your loved ones to have a happy and safe spring and summer!
